The Science

Your sleep problem
isn't about sleep

It's about a nervous system that can't downshift.

When your sympathetic nervous system stays locked in overdrive, no amount of melatonin, white noise, or weighted fabric will override it. The research points to one solution: directly calm the autonomic nervous system through the body — not the mind.

SYMPATHETIC (STRESSED)PARASYMPATHETIC (CALM)SOUNDBLANKET

SoundBlanket uses two clinically studied technologies — haptic vibration and grounding — to shift your nervous system from sympathetic dominance to parasympathetic calm.

SoundBlanket combines two clinically studied modalities — each backed by independent, published research — into a single sleep surface. Click any study to view the full citation.

Technology 01

Haptic Vibration

SoundBlanket converts any audio source into low-frequency vibrations distributed across the body through embedded transducers. This is the same therapeutic mechanism studied under the names vibroacoustic therapy (VAT) and vibrotactile stimulation.

The vibrations activate mechanoreceptors in the skin, sending signals through the somatosensory cortex to the brainstem, which triggers a parasympathetic nervous system response — reducing heart rate, increasing HRV, and shifting the body from fight-or-flight to rest-and-digest.

Low-frequency vibration improves HRV and cognitive performance under stress

University of Pittsburgh2023n = 38

Soothing vibrations increased heart rate variability by ~11% within 3 minutes in a placebo-controlled crossover trial — the gold standard for clinical evidence.

Closed-loop vibration stimulation improves sleep quality in poor sleepers

Samsung Medical Center2024n = 27

Vibration during sleep significantly increased parasympathetic activity during deep N3 sleep (p = 0.046), reduced wake-after-sleep-onset, and mitigated EEG hyperarousal patterns.

Vibroacoustic stimulation reduces physiological and cognitive stress

National Institute of Public Health, Copenhagen2024n = 40

Vibroacoustic stimulation increased parasympathetic activity (RMSSD p = 0.031, HF p = 0.032), with EEG confirming increased relaxation and reduced cortical arousal.

Grounding

The SoundBlanket Pro includes a conductive grounding layer that connects your body to the Earth's electrical charge. Grounding (or earthing) has been studied for over two decades as a method for normalizing cortisol and reducing inflammation.

When the body is electrically grounded, mobile electrons from the Earth neutralize positively charged free radicals, reducing oxidative stress. This also normalizes diurnal cortisol secretion — lowering nighttime cortisol levels and resynchronizing the circadian rhythm for deeper, more restorative sleep.

Earthing mat significantly improves sleep quality, reduces insomnia severity

Randomized Controlled Trial2025n = 60

31 days of grounding significantly improved PSQI, ISI, and ESS scores (all P < 0.05) and increased total sleep time vs. sham control — the strongest grounding-sleep study to date.

Grounding reduces nighttime cortisol and normalizes circadian rhythm

Independent Clinical Study2004n = 12 (8 weeks)

8 weeks of grounded sleep significantly reduced nighttime cortisol and resynchronized the 24-hour cortisol profile toward normal circadian rhythm. Sleep, pain, and stress all improved.

Grounding improves heart rate variability beyond basic relaxation

UC Irvine / University of Connecticut2011n = 28

Grounded subjects showed 63% increase in HF-HRV vs. 33% for controls (P < 0.01), indicating a significant shift toward parasympathetic dominance — not just relaxation.

The Convergence

Two pathways. One target.

Haptic vibration activates the parasympathetic nervous system through somatosensory nerve pathways. Grounding normalizes cortisol through bioelectrical equilibrium with the Earth. Both mechanisms converge on the same target: shifting the autonomic nervous system out of sympathetic overdrive and into the calm state required for deep, restorative sleep.

SoundBlanket is the first consumer product to combine both modalities in a single sleep surface.

Not a wristband. Not a mat. A full-body, full-night intervention that works while you sleep — addressing your nervous system from two independent vectors simultaneously.

Our Commitment

What we claim. What we don't.

At this price point, you deserve transparency — not marketing dressed up as science. Here's exactly where we stand.

Built on published research

Every claim on this page is rooted in peer-reviewed, independently conducted studies on vibroacoustic therapy and grounding. We cite 17 published papers from institutions including the University of Pittsburgh, Samsung Medical Center, UC Irvine, and the National Institute of Public Health in Copenhagen.

Honest about what we know

No study has tested the exact combination of haptic vibration and grounding in a blanket form factor. We don't claim otherwise. The two modalities are individually well-studied, and their shared mechanism — parasympathetic nervous system activation — is well-established. We connect the dots; we don't overstate them.

Committed to our own evidence

We're actively pursuing clinical research on SoundBlanket's specific effects on sleep architecture, HRV, and cortisol. Our goal is to publish results from our own IRB-approved studies — not just rely on the foundational research we're built on. We'll share the findings here, whatever they show.

We'd rather show you six strong studies than stretch the truth across sixty. The science speaks for itself.
